Project Power is Netflix’s latest high budget movie made just for the platform, with a reported $85 million budget.
Despite the solid cast led by Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, reviews are pretty mixed right now.
The main criticism seems to be on the plot and that the star quality of the actors was the only redeeming factor.
So is Netflix’s Project Power worth watching? Minor spoilers ahead.
What is Project Power about?
This Netflix movie is yet another one relating to superpowers, and it’s a concept that has been done plenty of times in the past.
However, they did bring in a new touch to it. These superpowers are gained by consuming pills distributed by certain drug dealers. Anyone who consumes the pill will get a superpower but it works for only five minutes, and taking too much of them will probably kill you.
Apart from that, there’s always the risk of not gaining a superpower and dying immediately upon consumption.
If the person doesn’t die, he’ll have a superpower but it can be a weak one. The superpower is also fixed, meaning the person gets the same power every time he takes the pill.
In this movie, Jamie Foxx plays as Art (aka The Major), a retired soldier who is trying to find his daughter and putting an end to the people who are selling these drugs.
The female lead is Robin, played by Dominique Fishback, and she’s one of the drug dealers selling the pills in the streets of New Orleans.
She is joined by Joseph who plays as Frank Shaver, a cop working in New Orleans. He is friends with Robin as he too buys the pills for himself.
In short, the plot is mainly on the three of them eventually trying to stop the company that’s selling the drugs to regular people.
Is Project Power worth watching?
In short, if you simply love movies with superpowers, you can’t go wrong with this one.
Project Power once again introduces powers that aren’t new to movies in the same genre. But like zombie movies, if you love them, you’ll love this one.
The movie does not have a complicated plot nor is it full of twists, but it’s still highly entertaining.
Despite its mediocre reviews, it’s still pulling in plenty of viewers in many countries.
If you’re in just to be entertained during the pandemic, do check this movie out on Netflix.
